How it holds together
Why the split matters
An awarding organisation cannot mark its own homework. These four functions are deliberately kept apart.
Governance
Sets direction, holds the regulatory relationship and carries statutory responsibility. Includes an independent non-executive seat so oversight does not sit entirely inside the organisation.
Academic
Writes and maintains the units, learning outcomes and assessment criteria. Draws on academics from UK higher education institutions alongside practising industry specialists.
Verification
Samples and quality-assures assessment decisions inside centres and across them, and checks the audit trail behind each judgement. Independent of the people who wrote the unit.
Operations
Keeps the machinery running — centre support, qualification development workflow, assessment logistics and the systems that hold learner records.
